How much heat protectant is enough?

Enough to leave every section feeling lightly coated, never dripping. Creams here are dosed at about a chestnut sized amount for a full head, serums at a pump or two worked through the lengths, sprays at a visible even mist per section. Hair that feels wet with product has too much; hair that feels exactly as it did before has too little.

Should protectant be reapplied between the dryer and the iron?

If you blow dry and then iron in the same session, the damp hair application is your base and it stays in the hair. A light dry safe mist before the iron is a reasonable top up for high heat or second passes over the same section. What does not help is re wetting styled hair with a damp hair spray, which will steam and frizz under the plates.
