How this review was made: from the manufacturer's published formula and specifications, the live Amazon listing, and recurring themes in owner commentary. Eclat Press does not claim hands-on testing it has not done, and publishes no scores.

No. 1

The formula on paper

The base is a wax and oil structure built from sweet almond oil with rose and mimosa waxes, carrying elderberry, starflower and Optimega oils and the line's Padina Pavonica extract. That composition explains the behaviour owners describe: solid enough to scoop, rich enough to dissolve long wear makeup on contact, and formulated to emulsify into a milk when water joins, rather than sitting on skin as grease. The aromatic side comes from a blend of nine essential oils, lavender, chamomile and eucalyptus named by the brand, which is why the scent registers as herbal spa rather than perfume counter.

No. 2

Texture and the three stage cleanse

The brand's three texture claim is literal. The balm warms into an oil under massage, which is the stage that does the makeup work, and then turns milky as fingertips add water, which is the stage that lets it rinse. Removal with a warm, damp cloth is printed in the directions and matters: owners who skip it are the ones who report film. The second use deserves its own note. Smoothed on generously and left for ten minutes, the same jar becomes a nourishing mask, which softens the value question more than any discount does.

What owners keep saying

Owner sentiment clusters tightly. Praise concentrates on the scent, on makeup melting without rubbing, and on the conditioned after feel. Complaints concentrate on the jar arriving shifted in warm weather, which the brand pre-empts in the listing by explaining the low melting point, and on the fragrance itself, which a minority find too much of a presence at the sink. Neither complaint concerns whether the product cleanses; both concern whether its personality suits the buyer.

No. 4

Where it sits in the wardrobe

Against its own siblings the original is the maximalist choice. The Naked edition removes the aroma for sensitive skin and the Rose edition turns it floral and soothing, but neither changes the job. Read against the Dynamic Resurfacing Facial Wash, the difference is philosophy: the balm cleanses by dissolving, the wash by foaming and enzyming. Dry and makeup wearing skin belongs here; oily, foam loyal skin belongs there.

The Cleansing Balm earns its flagship status, but on specific terms.

In Owners' Hands

Recurring themes, in aggregate and without numbers we cannot stand behind.

What owners praise

  • The scent is repeatedly described as a spa visit in a jar
  • Makeup, including long wear base, melts without rubbing
  • Skin feels conditioned after rinsing rather than tight

What owners question

  • The balm can arrive shifted or partly melted in warm weather, which the brand notes is cosmetic only
  • Some owners find a residue if they skip the cloth step
  • The fragrance divides opinion sharply

Questions, Answered

Can the Cleansing Balm be my only cleanser?

For most users, yes: it removes makeup and daily buildup in one step and rinses to a milk. If you wear very long wear or waterproof formulas, a slow first pass with the balm followed by a quick second pass with a small amount is the routine owners settle into, rather than adding a separate foaming wash.

Is the balm suitable for sensitive skin?

The original is fragranced with essential oils, which is the main sensitivity consideration. Elemis makes the Naked edition specifically as the fragrance free route into the same formula family, and the listing positions it for sensitive or reactive skin types. Patch test either version first if your skin is reactive.
