EltaMD UV Daily SPF 40 Review: The Sunscreen for People Whose Skin Drinks Moisturizer
A full review of EltaMD UV Daily SPF 40: hyaluronic acid inside the familiar zinc and octinoxate pairing, the dewy finish trade off, and how it divides the line with UV Clear.

How this review was made: from the manufacturer's published formula and specifications, the live Amazon listing, and recurring themes in owner commentary. Eclat Press does not claim hands-on testing it has not done, and publishes no scores.
One formula decision, understood properly
The Daily and Clear pumps share a filter identity, so the review is really about everything around the filters. Where UV Clear goes oil free with niacinamide for blemish prone skin, UV Daily loads sodium hyaluronate and a richer lotion base for skin whose complaint is water loss. The listing positions it for dry and normal skin and keeps it fragrance free and noncomedogenic, which is why sensitive dry skin so often lands here after failing with heavier creams. The six point SPF gap is real but secondary: both are broad spectrum daily ratings, and the one worn generously every morning is the one protecting you.
Finish and layering through a day
Owners describe skin feeling moisturized rather than coated, and that comfort is the product working as designed. The same moisture reads as shine on combination skin by midday, the recurring complaint, and in humid summers some wearers migrate to UV Clear and return in winter, a seasonal split this hub considers a feature of the line rather than a flaw in either pump. Under makeup it behaves well for most, with no pilling reported as a theme, provided the moisturizer instinct is respected: if you layer a full cream under it as well, expect dew to win.
The honest limits
It is not water resistant, so active and swim days leave it behind for UV Sheer or UV Physical. It is not mineral only, which excludes the filter purists. And the 1.7 oz pump does double duty as moisturizer and sunscreen, the two most generously applied products in a routine, so it empties faster than its size suggests. None of these are surprises; all three are printed or implied on the listing, and a daily sunscreen whose compromises are this legible is easy to recommend to the right skin.
UV Daily exists because the most common reason people abandon daily sunscreen is not cast or grease but tightness, the dry pull that sets in by midday.
From the verdict

Recurring themes, in aggregate and without numbers we cannot stand behind.

Questions, Answered
Can UV Daily replace my morning moisturizer?
For normal and mildly dry skin, that is exactly its design brief: hyaluronic acid moisture and SPF in one pump, applied as the morning step. Very dry skin may still want a cream beneath it, particularly in winter, and in that case the honest EltaMD answer is AM Restore underneath and UV Daily over it.
UV Daily or UV Clear for combination skin?
It depends which half of the combination complains louder. Dry cheeks and a comfortable T zone point to UV Daily; an oily T zone and blemish prone skin point to the oil free UV Clear. Many combination owners settle seasonally, Daily in winter, Clear in summer, and the identical pump format makes the swap painless.
