Hair Mask Care and Keeping: Fixing Flat, Coated and Underwhelming Results

Too much product, placed too high. Rich masks belong from the mid lengths down for most hair, with only the formulas directed for scalp use, Kerastase Chronologiste and Christophe Robin among them, going to the root. Halve the dose, keep it off the top third of the hair, and rinse with warm rather than cool water so the conditioning layer sets thinner. Fine hair should also shorten its masking frequency to once weekly or less.

Either the mask was layered over existing product build up, or it was under rinsed. Clarify the hair properly before the next mask day, then rinse longer than feels necessary, until the lengths feel clean rather than slippery. Silicone containing jars build this feeling faster over successive weeks, which is one reason a clarifying wash belongs in every masking routine.

That stiffness is the classic sign of protein overload in cosmetic terms: too much protein support, not enough moisture around it. Skip the protein leaning mask, the Briogeo and keratin led entries are the usual suspects, for two to three wash days, and use a pure moisture mask such as the Moroccanoil jar in its place. When you return to protein, return at the directed weekly rhythm, not more often.

Check the three silent causes in order. Application to dripping wet hair dilutes any mask, so towel blot first. Contact time cut short is next: three minutes of a ten minute mask is a conditioner, not a mask. Third, for K18 specifically, conditioner used underneath against its directions blocks the protocol entirely. Fix whichever applies before judging the formula, because owners who fix them routinely reverse the verdict.

Usually an oil led mask dosed like a cream mask. The Christophe Robin direction is a small amount, emulsified and massaged in, and doubling it doubles the oil load without doubling the benefit. Rewash just the lengths with a gentle shampoo, and next time apply the oil led formula to towel dried rather than soaking hair so you can judge the amount honestly.

Jars and tubs, which are most of this category, keep best with dry hands or a clean spatula, lids closed between uses, and storage on a shelf rather than the shower floor where water pools. Pumps such as the K18 and Olaplex bottles are naturally cleaner, but their nozzles benefit from a weekly wipe. Keep all of these products out of direct sun on a windowsill, and retire anything whose scent or texture has noticeably changed since opening.
