Vichy Mineral 89 clear glass 30 ml pump bottle with blue gradient base and gel texture smear behind it
No. 1

Vichy Mineral 89 Hyaluronic Acid Serum

Best Oil Free Gel

The minimalist benchmark: pure hyaluronic acid in mineral rich volcanic water, in a formula of just 11 ingredients.

Oil free, fragrance free and non sticky, with a gel texture that absorbs instead of sitting on the surface. It is the easiest recommendation in this edit for shine prone skin.

Suits

Almost anyone starting a hyaluronic acid step: sensitive, oily, combination and dry skin that wants a fragrance free, alcohol free gel that layers under anything.

Skip if

Your skin is very dry and wants a cushioned, cream adjacent serum on its own. Mineral 89 is a lean gel and most dry skin owners seal it with a moisturiser.

Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Hyaluronic Cloud Serum pale blue 30 ml pump bottle labelled 75% hyaluronic acid complex with sodium PCA and silk proteins
No. 2

Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Hyaluronic Liquid Gel Cloud Serum

Best Matte Finish

The concentration headline: a 75 percent hyaluronic acid complex in a clear liquid gel that dries to a silky, matte finish.

The silk proteins give a deliberately matte dry down, so hydration arrives without the dewy film oily skin usually avoids. It doubles well as a pre makeup layer.

Suits

Oily, combination and layering focused skin that wants the highest stated hyaluronic complex in this edit in a weightless, oil free gel.

You dislike a matte finish from your hydration step, or your dry skin wants an emollient cushion rather than a silk veil.

Kiehl's Ultra Pure High-Potency Serum 1.5% Hyaluronic Acid clear 30 ml dropper bottle with white apothecary label reading formulated with only 7 ingredients
No. 3

Kiehl's Ultra Pure High-Potency 1.5% Hyaluronic Acid Serum

Best No Extras Option

The shortest formula in the edit: 1.5 percent hyaluronic acid, glycerin and five supporting ingredients, nothing else.

Seven ingredients, no fragrance, no oils, and a fast absorbing texture. Oily skin that breaks routine experiments down to single variables will appreciate how little else is in the bottle.

Suits

Ingredient minimalists, sensitive skin and routine builders who want a stated hyaluronic acid percentage in the fewest possible ingredients, fragrance free.

You want partner actives doing extra work. With seven ingredients total, this serum hydrates and deliberately leaves everything else to the rest of your routine.

Questions, Answered

Does oily skin actually need a hyaluronic acid serum?

Oil and water are different things. Oily skin can be surface dehydrated, especially with foaming cleansers, exfoliating acids or acne focused routines in the same regimen, and that dehydration can make skin feel tight while still looking shiny. A light humectant gel addresses the water side without adding oil.

Can a hyaluronic serum replace moisturiser for oily skin?

In humid weather, a gel like Mineral 89 under sunscreen is enough for some oily skin in the morning. In the evening, or in dry climates, a light moisturiser over it still helps keep the water in place. Skin that starts producing obvious shine within an hour of a rich cream is the clearest candidate for the serum plus sunscreen only approach.
