Bond Treatment Care and Keeping: Fixing Stiff, Dry and Underwhelming Results

The common bond routine failures and their fixes: hair left stiff, dry, coated or unchanged, protocols run wrong, and storage care for sprays, pumps and concentrates.

Most bond treatment complaints are scheduling and protocol complaints in disguise. The same bottle that leaves one owner's hair resilient leaves another's stiff, and the difference is usually dose, frequency, a skipped conditioner, or a moisture layer that never got scheduled. Work through the failure you recognise before replacing the product, because in this category the fix is very often free.

The Common Problems

Each with the fix that solves it most often.

01. Hair feels stiff and straw like after starting a bond routine

That stiffness is the classic signature of the treatment and protein layers outrunning moisture. Pause the bond treatment for two wash days, run a pure moisture mask such as Olaplex No.8 or the Amika Kure mask in its place, and wash with conditioner on every wash in between. When you restart the bond step, restart at the lowest directed frequency, weekly for the intensive treatments, and keep the moisture mask in the calendar permanently this time.

02. Hair feels dry even though the treatment is working

Both things can be true, because bond treatments are not conditioners. No.3 and the Redken intensive bottle both state versions of that on their own listings. Keep shampoo and conditioner after every pre-shampoo treatment, add a leave in cream on styling days, and judge the treatment on strength and breakage feel while judging your conditioners on softness. Splitting the scorecard that way stops good treatments being binned for failing at a job they never claimed.

03. The treatment seemed to do nothing at all

Check the protocol faults in order. Hair too wet or too dry for the product's directed state dilutes or blocks it: No.0 wants dry hair, No.3 wants damp, the Kerastase concentrate wants damp and unrinsed. Contact time cut short is next; these are timed products, not splashes. Third, for K18, anything layered under or over it during its four minutes works against its directions. Correct whichever applies and give the product three honest treatment days before judging it.

04. Results were good at first, then flattened out

Usually build up or a changed need, not a failed product. Clarify the hair once, properly, and reassess: hair that has been treated weekly for months often needs the intensive step less often, with the daily leave in carrying more of the load. Rotate down before you rotate brands, and keep notes on frequency; bond routines drift out of tune slowly and are retuned the same way.

05. Fine hair feels weighed down by the routine

Shrink every dose before changing any product. K18 at one pump, the Redken leave in at half the dime size, pre-shampoo treatments combed through the lengths only and rinsed thoroughly. Fine hair also does better with the leave in and serum formats, No.9 and No.7 in drops, than with cream masks layered in the same week as a treatment. One treatment layer and one light styling layer is the fine hair ceiling.

06. Sprays, pumps and concentrates stored in a steamy bathroom

Keep the Epres concentrate vials sealed and dry until mixing day, and once mixed, use the spray bottle as your working stock rather than mixing both vials at once. Pump bottles such as No.9 and the Kerastase concentrate keep best with a wiped nozzle and the cap seated, out of direct sun. The Redken and Olaplex bottles should stand upright on a shelf rather than the shower floor. Retire anything whose scent or texture has noticeably changed since opening, and write the opening month on the base of prestige bottles so the decision is a fact, not a guess.

The Products in This Care Edit

The leading names from the ranked guide - the formulas this page teaches you to keep well.

Olaplex No.3 Hair Perfector white 100 ml bottle with flip cap in front of a cream texture smear, label reading The Original Hair Perfector

Best Overall

The original: the pre-shampoo perfector that started the bond category, built on the brand's patented Bond Building Technology as published.

The reference product of the category still earns the top place: one patented active as published, a ten minute weekly pre-shampoo protocol, and the deepest owner record of any bond product sold. For a first bond purchase on damaged looking hair, this is the bottle the rivals are all answering.

Suits

Damaged looking hair of any type that needs one proven weekly treatment step: bleached, coloured or heat styled hair that feels fragile and breaks easily in brushing.

Skip if

Your hair is healthy, unprocessed and only dry. No.3 is a treatment, not a conditioner or a moisture mask, and the brand says so on its own listing; dry hair without damage is better served by the No.8 mask in this edit.

Size
100 ml / 3.3 fl oz
Format
Pre-shampoo cream treatment, bottle
Key Ingredients
Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate (the brand's Bond Building Technology, as published), panthenol, jojoba seed oil, sweet almond oil
Use
Apply generously to damp hair before shampooing, leave 10 minutes, rinse, then shampoo and condition, once weekly or up to 2 to 3 times weekly for very damaged hair, as directed by the brand

K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask white 50 ml pump bottle beside its red and white carton reading K18PEPTIDE biotech

Best Leave In Treatment

The peptide exception in a bond edit: a leave in treatment the brand publishes under molecular repair naming, used instead of conditioner and never rinsed.

K18 refuses the category's usual shape: no rinse, no conditioner, four minutes, a patented peptide as its published system. It ranks second only because its brief is damage without dryness; for processed hair that hates long routines, it is effectively first.

Suits

Bleached, coloured, chemically serviced or heat styled hair that looks and feels damaged, for owners who want the treatment step finished in four minutes with no rinse and no conditioner.

Skip if

Your main complaint is dryness rather than damage, or you want a rich mask ritual. This is a light cream dosed in single pumps, and the moisture brief belongs to the No.8 or Amika entries here.

Olaplex No.0 Intensive Bond Building Hair Treatment 155 ml spray bottle with trigger sprayer over a liquid swatch, label reading primes repairs strengthens

Best Primer for Heavily Processed Hair

The primer: a spray on first step the brand directs underneath No.3, for hair that needs the deepest version of the Olaplex routine.

A four ingredient spray primer built to be layered under No.3, for the hair in this edit that is furthest gone in look and feel. It cannot rank higher because it is half a routine by design, but as that half it has no substitute here.

Suits

Heavily bleached, repeatedly coloured or otherwise seriously compromised hair, used as the brand directs: as the priming half of a two step routine with No.3 layered over it.

Skip if

You want one product, one step. No.0 is published as a primer for No.3 and is not positioned as a standalone treatment; on its own it is the wrong purchase, and No.3 alone covers milder damage.

Size
155 ml / 5.2 fl oz
Format
Pre-shampoo primer spray, trigger bottle
Key Ingredients
Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate (the brand's Bond Building Technology, as published); four ingredient formula as printed on the packaging

Spray onto dry hair until damp, leave 10 minutes, layer No.3 over without rinsing, leave 10 more minutes, rinse, shampoo and condition, as directed by the brand

Questions, Answered

Should I clarify before starting a bond routine?

If your hair carries months of styling product, dry shampoo and hard water residue, yes: one clarifying wash gives the first treatment a clean surface and a fair trial, and the Kerastase Premiere system in the main edit is built around exactly that residue problem. Otherwise, start the routine as directed and clarify only if results stall.

Can bond treatments be used right after a salon colour service?

Home treatments are generally used on the first wash days after a service, following each product's own directions, and owners commonly treat in the fortnight after lightening when hair feels most fragile. What they should not do is substitute for the salon's own in service bond steps, and any colourist instruction about the first washes after your specific service takes precedence over a bottle's general directions.
