Olaplex No.0 Intensive Bond Building Hair Treatment Review

A full review of Olaplex No.0: the four ingredient primer spray, the layered routine with No.3 it exists to serve, and the damage level at which the extra step earns its place.

How this review was made: from the manufacturer's published formula and specifications, the live Amazon listing, and recurring themes in owner commentary. Eclat Press does not claim hands-on testing it has not done, and publishes no scores.

No. 1

A four ingredient argument

The packaging prints the whole formula: water, Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate, phenoxyethanol, sodium benzoate. No fragrance cast, no oil blend, no conditioning chorus. Olaplex presents No.0 as the highest concentration expression of its active in the home range, in a water light spray designed to wet the hair thoroughly so the perfector layered over it can work through evenly. Read as cosmetics, that leanness cuts both ways: there is nothing in the bottle to make hair feel conditioned, because conditioning is not its assignment, and owners who spray it on alone and judge the feel afterwards are grading the wrong subject.

No. 2

The layered routine, step by step

The directed sequence runs: spray No.0 onto dry hair section by section until it is damp throughout, leave ten minutes without rinsing, apply No.3 generously over the top, leave ten more, then rinse, shampoo and condition. Twenty minutes before the shower proper starts. On long or dense hair the spray format earns its keep here, since saturating dry lengths with a cream by hand is slow and uneven, while the trigger bottle lays the primer down fast. The failure modes are predictable: hair sprayed too lightly in the lengths that need it most, and the second wait cut short because the first one already felt long.

No. 3

Who actually notices the difference

The honest centre of this review is the split in owner reports, because it maps so cleanly onto damage level. Hair lifted repeatedly, hair that feels fragile to the touch and breaks in the brush, tends to report the pairing as a genuine upgrade: stronger feel, smoother finish, better behaviour under heat. Hair with a single process, or heat damage only, tends to report that No.3 alone had already delivered most of it. That is not a flaw in the bottle; it is the brand's own intensive positioning playing out. The buying rule it produces is simple and saves money in the right order: No.3 first, No.0 when the damage outruns it.

No. 4

Ownership notes

Long term owners praise the pair routine as their post colour insurance and the spray's even coverage, and complain about the cumulative time, the two bottle cost, and a trigger spray that some find tiring on very long hair. A practical pattern in the commentary is seasonality: the full pairing run intensively in the weeks after a lightening appointment, then No.3 alone maintaining weekly, which stretches both bottles considerably.

No.0 is the most conditional product in the Olaplex line: bought for the right hair, it completes the deepest home version of the brand's routine; bought for the wrong hair, it is an extra bottle doing a job No.3 already did.

From the verdict

In Owners' Hands

Recurring themes, in aggregate and without numbers we cannot stand behind.

What owners praise

  • The two step routine leaving very processed hair feeling noticeably stronger and smoother than No.3 alone
  • Even saturation on long hair compared with working a cream through by hand
  • Lengths looking shinier and behaving better under heat styling after treatment days

What owners question

  • The extra step and extra bottle are the recurring objection
  • Trigger spray bottles dividing owners, some preferring a slower, targeted application
  • Mildly damaged hair reporting little difference over No.3 alone, which matches the brand's own positioning

Consider Instead

Olaplex No.3 Hair Perfector white 100 ml bottle with flip cap in front of a cream texture smear, label reading The Original Hair Perfector

Olaplex No.3 Hair Perfector

The perfector itself, which should be owned first; for many heads of damaged hair it is the whole routine.

Epres Bond Repair Treatment Starter Kit dark green carton with white refillable spray bottle and two 15 ml concentrate vials, carton reading acid free and creates 300 ml when mixed

Epres Bond Repair Treatment Starter Kit

The other spray format in this edit, an acid free concentrate for owners who want a pre-wash spray without committing to the Olaplex pairing.

Questions, Answered

Can No.0 be used on its own without No.3?

The brand positions and directs it as a primer for No.3, not as a standalone treatment, and this review follows that direction. Owners do experiment, but the published routine, the one the product was built for, layers the perfector over the primer. Judged alone against products designed to stand alone, it will always look incomplete.

Why does the current bottle have a trigger spray?

The 155 ml format verified here ships as a spray bottle, as the product photo shows, because the directed application is to saturate dry hair evenly before layering. Spraying section by section until the hair is damp, not dripping, is the technique the directions describe.
