Eye Cream Care and Keeping

Getting an eye product to perform: application amount, pilling, residue, sensitivity and the morning after problems owners actually meet, solved in order.

Most eye cream disappointment is technique wearing a product's name. The formulas in this category are used in rice grain amounts on the thinnest skin of the face, layered under sunscreen and concealer, and judged on mornings shaped by sleep and salt. This page works through the problems owners actually report, with the adjustment that solves each one.

The Common Problems

Each with the fix that solves it most often.

01. Concealer pills or slides over the eye cream

Use less, and wait longer. A rice grain amount per eye is the whole dose; double it and the surplus has nowhere to go but into your makeup. Give the product a full minute to settle, two for rich creams, and press concealer on rather than dragging it. If pilling persists, the pairing is the problem: a rich cream under a silicone heavy concealer is the classic clash, and moving the cream to the night slot, with a gel in the morning, resolves most cases without a new purchase.

02. The temporary tightener leaves white residue

Residue means too much product, almost every time. The brand's own guidance for the FirmX formula is that less is more: pick up a tiny amount, spread it in one thin, even layer over clean, dry skin, and keep the face still and expressionless while it sets. Do not layer it over rich creams, which break the film, and do not touch up a set film with more product. If a faint edge remains, a barely damp fingertip pressed, not rubbed, at the edge softens it.

03. Eyes water or sting after application

First, placement: eye products belong on the orbital bone, not the lash line, and migration into the eye is the usual cause of watering. Apply less, further out, and give it a minute before blinking hard or applying makeup. Second, ingredients: fragranced formulas and formulas with alcohol are the common culprits on reactive eyes, and both are flagged in this edit's entries where they occur. Persistent stinging is a stop signal, not a tolerance programme; move the product to a friend whose eyes are less opinionated.

04. Puffiness looks worse, not better, in the morning

A rich cream applied generously right before bed can sit heavily on the eye area all night, and some owners wake looking fuller around the eyes for it. Try the cream earlier in the evening, in a thinner layer, kept to the orbital bone. Then check the non cosmetic variables before blaming the jar: sleep position, a salty late meal, alcohol and allergy season all present at the eye first. The depuffing gel in this edit, used in the morning, is the product actually designed for this photograph.

05. Nothing is changing after a month

Audit the experiment before the product. Was it used daily, in its directed slot, at the directed amount? Was the expectation appearance level, softer looking lines, calmer mornings, brighter looking shadow, or removal, which no product in this category offers? Photograph in the same light as your starting picture; memory edits gradual change out entirely. If the answers are honest and the mirror is still flat, the format is probably wrong for your brief, and the format guide in this topic is the right next page, not a more expensive jar of the same texture.

06. The jar or pump is misbehaving

For jars, use the spatula if one came in the box, or clean hands and a closed lid kept out of shower steam; the formula you protect is the one you paid for. For pumps that sputter at the end, store the bottle upright and accept measured patience for the last doses. For applicator tubes, wipe the metal tip after every use, as its hygiene is the price of the cooling ritual. Never decant an eye product into another container: you lose the batch information and gain nothing.

The Products in This Care Edit

The leading names from the ranked guide - the formulas this page teaches you to keep well.

StriVectin Intensive Eye Concentrate Plus white tube with pink stripe and NIA-114 technology mark

Best Overall

The daily concentrate of the edit: NIA-114 niacin technology in a full 1 oz tube, aimed at every line the eye area draws.

The most complete daily eye product in the edit. NIA-114 gives the formula a backbone few rivals can name, the supporting cast covers lines, the look of puffiness and firmness in one brief, and the 1 oz fragrance free tube outlasts every 15 ml jar here. It asks for weeks and gives a routine that needs nothing else.

Suits

Readers who want one serious daily eye product rather than a wardrobe: a fragrance free concentrate used morning and evening on crow's feet, under eye lines and the eleven lines between the brows.

Your only concern is morning puffiness and you want the lightest possible texture. A caffeine gel such as the Dermalogica pick will feel more at home in that routine.

Sunday Riley Auto Correct Brightening and Depuffing Eye Contour Cream clear pump bottle with white cap and gold banded label

Best for the Look of Dark Circles and Morning Puffiness

The morning brightener: caffeine and Brazilian ginseng with light reflecting particles, for eyes that look tired before they feel it.

Auto Correct is built for the mirror at 7 am. Caffeine and Brazilian ginseng work on the appearance of puffiness and shadow while light reflecting particles brighten the look immediately, and the butters keep the caffeine from feeling drying. The honest note is printed in its entry: part of the morning effect is optical, and that is a feature when the meeting is at nine.

Suits

Readers whose eye area looks shadowed and puffy in the morning and who want a cream that improves the appearance on application while it works over time.

You want a fragrance free, minimal formula above all. This is a rich, sensorial cream with butters and botanical extracts, and a plain gel may suit you better.

Dermalogica Awaken Peptide Eye Gel white 0.5 fl oz tube with grey nozzle cap, depuffing eye gel label

Best Lightweight Gel

The professional gel: tetrapeptides, caffeine and rosemary in a weightless morning formula built around the look of puffiness.

The professional pick. A tetrapeptide and caffeine gel with a succinic acid radiance blend, directed once each morning, that disappears under makeup and never pretends to be a night cream. For oily lids and puffiness first routines, nothing else here is as well aimed.

Suits

Morning puffiness and makeup wearers. The gel texture absorbs fast, leaves no rich film, and was designed as a once a day morning step by a professional channel brand.

Your eye area is dry and crepey and needs feeding. A gel this light is a depuffing step, not a moisturising one, and a cream will serve you better at night.

Questions, Answered

How much eye cream should I actually use?

Less than instinct says. A rice grain amount per eye covers the orbital bone for most creams and gels in this edit, and the concentrates spread further still. Over application is the root of pilling, residue, watering and wasted money alike, which is why nearly every fix on this page begins with the same instruction. When a product seems not to work, halve the amount before you change anything else.

Should eye cream go on before or after face moisturiser?

Before, in almost every routine. The eye product is the targeted, thinner layer and belongs closer to the skin, applied to the orbital bone after cleansing and any face serum, with moisturiser following around it rather than over it. The exception is a deliberate buffering pattern for very reactive skin, where a plain moisturiser goes first as a cushion; if that is your skin, the gentler picks in this edit will serve you better than the strong ones buffered.
