Face Oil Care and Keeping

Keeping a face oil performing: fixing greasiness, pilling, pillowcase tint, flat results and scent surprises, plus storage and bottle care for droppers and pumps.

Most face oil complaints are dose and position problems wearing a product costume. The oil blamed for greasiness is usually two drops too many in the wrong slot of the routine, and the oil dismissed as doing nothing is usually sitting under, instead of over, the layers it was meant to seal. Work through the fixes below before replacing a bottle; they are ordered by how often each problem shows up in owner commentary for this category.

The Common Problems

Each with the fix that solves it most often.

01. The oil sits on the skin and feels greasy for an hour

Halve the dose first: two drops is a full face dose for most oils in this edit, warmed between the palms and pressed, not rubbed, over the skin. Apply to slightly damp skin, which spreads a small amount further, and give it five minutes before judging. If a rich blend still feels heavy, move it to the night routine and use a squalane weight oil in the morning.

02. The oil pills or separates under sunscreen or makeup

Too much oil, or the next layer applied too soon, is the usual cause. Use less, press it in, and wait a full two minutes before sunscreen, then pat sunscreen and foundation on rather than massaging them across the oil film. Light oils such as the Biossance pair and the Elemis Superfood Oil are the least prone to it; save rich and tinted oils for the evening if your morning base is unforgiving.

03. A tinted oil marks pillowcases or pale collars

Turmeric and sea buckthorn oils are honestly coloured, and the fix is timing and dose rather than technique. Apply tinted oils at least twenty minutes before bed, use the directed drop count rather than a dropper full, and keep a darker pillowcase for oil nights if you use Phoenix or C.E.O. Glow nightly. In the morning, let the oil settle before a pale collar goes anywhere near your face.

04. Skin looks no different after several weeks of use

Check the position before the product. An oil applied to bare dry skin has little water to seal, and an oil applied under a water based serum can block the serum's work. Restore the standard order for two weeks: cleanse, serum, moisturiser, oil last, on slightly damp skin. If comfort improves but glow does not, the honest conclusion is that a plain seal was never going to do a treatment's job, and a vitamin C oil is the logical change.

05. The oil's smell has changed, or it has turned sharp and stale

Seed and botanical oils oxidise with heat, light and time, and a sharp, crayon like or stale smell is the sign to retire the bottle. Store oils upright in a drawer or cabinet, away from steamy shelves and sunny windowsills, with caps fully closed. Note the period after opening symbol on the packaging and work to it, especially for the cold pressed blends in this edit.

06. A dropper delivers uneven amounts, or a pump clogs

For droppers, draw slowly and tap the pipette against the bottle neck rather than the skin, and never rest the pipette on the sink between uses. For pumps, wipe dried oil from the nozzle with a damp tissue after use and store the bottle upright with its cap on. Do not decant a sealed pump bottle into another container; the air exposure costs more freshness than the recovered oil is worth.

Biossance Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil pink tinted 30 ml dropper bottle with rose gold collar and white label

Best Overall

The glow oil built on squalane: an oil soluble vitamin C in a sugarcane squalane base, finished with Chios crystal oil and Damascus rose extract.

It is the easiest first oil to recommend honestly: a featherweight sugarcane squalane base carrying an oil soluble vitamin C, so the sealing step most routines need also does brightening work. The rose scent is the one caveat, and it is stated on the entry rather than buried.

Suits

Normal, dry and dull looking skin that wants its brightening step and its oil step in one bottle, and readers new to face oils who want a light first oil with an active in it.

You avoid fragrance character in leave on products. The Damascus rose extract gives this oil a noticeable rose scent, and the pure squalane entry below is the scent free route to the same base oil.

Sunday Riley C.E.O. Glow amber orange 35 ml dropper bottle with gold collar and label reading Vitamin C + Turmeric Face Oil with THD Ascorbate

Best for Glow

The statement glow oil: THD ascorbate and golden turmeric in cold pressed raspberry and evening primrose oils, in the orange bottle.

THD ascorbate with golden turmeric in raspberry and evening primrose oils is the most deliberate glow formula here, and the orange bottle delivers the morning radiance its name promises. It ranks below the Biossance only because its scent and tint ask more of the user.

Suits

Dull, uneven looking skin that wants a visible morning glow from its oil step, and vitamin C users who prefer the comfortable, oil soluble form over a water based serum.

You want a fragrance free, single job oil. Turmeric and the seed oils give C.E.O. Glow a warm, distinctive scent and an unmistakable orange tint on the skin at first application.

Clarins Aroma Blue Orchid Treatment Oil golden yellow 30 ml dropper bottle with silver collar and 100 percent plant extracts badge

Best for Dehydrated Skin

The French pharmacy original for dehydrated skin: blue orchid and hazelnut oil in a formula Clarins has sold since the aromatherapy era began.

Hazelnut oil and blue orchid in a 100 percent plant extracts formula is the classic answer to skin that feels tight and looks dull, with decades of the same brief behind it. It is a night oil with a real aromatic presence, and the ranking says so openly.

Suits

Dehydrated, tight and dull looking skin, especially skin that feels dry yet still produces some oil, and readers who enjoy a classic aromatic treatment ritual at night.

You avoid essential oils on principle. Blue Orchid is an aromatic treatment oil in the Clarins tradition, and patchouli essential oil is part of its identity, not an accident.

Questions, Answered

How should face oils be stored?

Cool, dark and upright, caps closed: a drawer or cabinet rather than a bathroom window ledge. Cold pressed and essential oil containing formulas are the most light and heat sensitive, so the Clarins, Darphin, Juno and Phoenix bottles in this edit deserve the drawer most.

Can a face oil be used around the eyes?

A plain, fragrance free oil such as the pure squalane can be pressed sparingly along the orbital bone. Keep essential oil containing and tinted oils away from the immediate eye area, and stop any oil that migrates into the eyes or blurs vision; the eye area has dedicated products in this site's eye cream edit for a reason.
