The Review
Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Advanced Clean Dry Shampoo Review
A full review of Living Proof Advanced Clean: the rinse out clean positioning, the shake and wait ritual, the soft finish and who should buy the original instead.

How this review was made: from the manufacturer's published formula and specifications, the live Amazon listing, and recurring themes in owner commentary. Eclat Press does not claim hands-on testing it has not done, and publishes no scores.
The formula, in plain terms
The ingredient list printed by the manufacturer leads with the absorbency pair that does the work, rice starch and corn starch, supported by cyclodextrin and hydrated silica, with Furcellaria lumbricalis and Tetraselmis suecica extracts in the conditioning story the brand tells. The published free from list is part of the proposition: silicone free, paraben free and sulfate free, and colour safe. Nothing in the formula is a styling resin story, which explains the finish: this is a cleaning product that happens to be dry, not a texturiser that happens to absorb.
The ritual is the product
Living Proof's directions are unusually specific and they are not decoration. Shake the can extremely well, hold it six to ten inches from dry hair, section and sweep the product onto oily areas, wait 30 seconds while the powders activate, then remove by massaging and shaking at the roots or brushing. Skipping steps is the source of nearly every complaint attached to this can: powder that was never activated sits white, and powder that was never massaged out stays gritty. Done in full, the result is the soft finish the can advertises.
What owners report
Owner commentary returns to feel: hair that seems washed rather than refreshed, ends that stay soft, and styles that survive socially into a second day. The light citrus scent, milder than the original PhD fragrance, is generally welcomed. Complaints cluster on technique failures, on second day oil breakthrough for very oily scalps, and on the absence of root lift for owners who wanted a volumiser as well as a cleanser.
Advanced Clean or the original PhD
The original Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo, still sold alongside this one, leans on time release scent and added texture and body in its published benefits. Advanced Clean is the softer, more thorough cleanse with conditioned ends. Hair that styles itself and only needs odour and oil control may prefer the original's texture; hair that needs to feel clean should buy this one. They are siblings with different jobs, not a simple upgrade.
Advanced Clean is the dry shampoo for people who dislike dry shampoo texture.
From the verdict
In Owners' Hands
Recurring themes, in aggregate and without numbers we cannot stand behind.
What owners praise
- Hair feels genuinely clean rather than coated, according to recurring owner themes
- Softness at the ends is unusual in this category and often singled out
- Styles survive an extra day without looking separated or dull
What owners question
- Skipping the shake and wait steps leaves visible powder, owners warn
- Very oily roots can need a second application by day three
- The soft finish gives less root lift than texturising rivals
Consider Instead

IGK First Class Charcoal Detox Dry Shampoo
A heavier cleanse for oilier hair, with charcoal and a 7 percent powder load, for buyers who found Advanced Clean too gentle by day two.

Klorane Ultra Gentle Dry Shampoo with Oat+
A milder, simpler refresh for frequent use, without the ritual, at the pharmacy end of the prestige shelf.
Questions, Answered
Does Advanced Clean really leave no residue?
The brand's claim is no visible or textured residue after proper use, and the powder is expected to look white during the wait, especially on dark hair. Residue complaints almost always trace back to a skipped shake, wait or massage step. Treat the directions as part of the formula and the claim holds up in owner reporting.
Can I use it on freshly washed hair?
Yes, and the brand suggests exactly that pattern for extending styles: apply to clean hair before oil builds up, including over styling products used on damp hair, and let the powders work pre emptively. A light night time application on day one is the easiest way to make day two feel easy.
