Dermalogica PreCleanse Review: The Case for Cleansing Twice, Properly
A full review of Dermalogica PreCleanse: borage, kukui and apricot oils, the dry skin application rule, and whether the Double Cleanse earns its extra minute.

How this review was made: from the manufacturer's published formula and specifications, the live Amazon listing, and recurring themes in owner commentary. Eclat Press does not claim hands-on testing it has not done, and publishes no scores.
The oil blend and what it dissolves
The printed formula leads with borage seed, kukui and apricot kernel oils, a blend chosen for spreading easily and rinsing cleaner than heavier oils. Its targets are named plainly in the listing: layers of excess sebum, sunscreen, waterproof makeup, environmental pollutants and residual product that build up through the day. That list is the review in miniature, because if your day does not deposit those things, this product has little to do, and if it does, a gel alone was never going to finish the job.
The dry skin rule
Every complaint thread about PreCleanse contains the same first mistake: applying it to wet skin. Oil dissolves oil on contact, and water on the face blocks that contact. Used dry, massaged for a unhurried half minute, then followed by the gel, it performs exactly as the system promises. The pump bottle helps: measured doses, no dripping jar, no oil slicked sink.
What owners keep saying
Owners praise how completely sunscreen and long wear base come off, and how much cleaner the second cleanse feels compared with using the gel alone. The recurring complaints are the extra minute on tired evenings, the learning curve of the dry application, and the pump's habit of travelling badly when not locked. A minority of very oily skin owners simply prefer a single strong cleanse, which is a legitimate preference rather than a product failure.
PreCleanse makes an argument and then proves it at the sink: a water based cleanser cannot fully remove oil based buildup, so an oil goes first.
From the verdict
In Owners' Hands
Recurring themes, in aggregate and without numbers we cannot stand behind.
What owners praise
- Sunscreen and long wear base are described as melting without rubbing
- Skin feels cleaner after the second cleanse than with either product alone
- The oil rinses away more cleanly than owners expected
What owners question
- Using it on wet skin by mistake is a common early complaint, and it does not work that way
- The two step routine is more than some evenings allow
- The pump can travel poorly if not locked
Consider Instead

Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel 16.9 fl oz
If you cleanse mostly bare skin, the gel alone is the honest purchase and PreCleanse can wait until your makeup or SPF use grows

Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant 2.6 oz
If your evening residue is dullness rather than makeup, the polishing powder addresses it more directly
Questions, Answered
Do I rinse PreCleanse off before the gel?
The system is sequential: massage PreCleanse over dry skin to dissolve buildup, then apply your Dermalogica cleanser as the second step of the Double Cleanse, which is where the oil and dissolved residue are washed away. The gel is not an optional garnish; it completes the method.
Is PreCleanse suitable for oily skin?
The brand positions it for normal to oily skin in its professional materials, and the logic holds: an oil that dissolves sebum, followed by a proper gel cleanse, leaves oily skin cleaner than a harsh single wash. Owners with very oily skin who dislike any oil texture remain the exception.
